St. Mary's Healthcare CPiA (Cancer Prevention in Action)
Our Community Cancer Prevention in Action Program (CPiA), St. Mary’s Healthcare works to decrease exposure to ultraviolet radiation; increase cancer screening rates for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers; and increase awareness of and support for other cancer prevention efforts in Fulton, Montgomery, and Schenectady Counties.
Individual lifestyle choices are only one part of our ability to live healthy lives. The policies, systems, and places where we work, study, and play can help us live healthier. That is why we are working with our local businesses, local government, and other community organizations to take action against cancer.
Our Partners are Taking Action Against Cancer By:
- Adopting lasting policies to support cancer prevention amongst their staff, students, and patrons
- Encouraging the use of hats, sunscreen, and protective clothing when outside
- Making sun protection readily available by installing sunscreen dispensers and providing free sunscreen
- Adding shade for protection while enjoying outdoor spaces
- Promoting cancer screenings through worksite wellness
- Raising awareness that the HPV vaccine is cancer prevention
- Providing cancer prevention education to staff, students, and patrons
Why Policy, Systems, and Environmental Change Matters:
While we can all practice cancer prevention on our own, making changes to our community spaces, workplaces, schools, and outdoor parks can help make a lasting impact for all. By adopting new policies, systems, and environmental changes, our community can make sure the healthy choice is the default choice when it comes to cancer prevention.
