Stony Brook University (SBU) students learned this and more with Stony Brook Cancer Center\u2019s CPiA team at our \u2018What is HPV?\u2019 Education &amp; Jeopardy event. Over 60 students gathered for an educational workshop, hosted by guest speaker, Dr. Mary-Koslap Petraco, of SBU\u2019s School of Nursing. Students learned how to protect themselves from HPV, and how to be HPV vaccine champions in their future careers in nursing and healthcare. Students then tested their knowledge by playing \u2018What is HPV\u2019 Jeopardy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1e75a6f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"1e75a6f\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-531b9e6 ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"531b9e6\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-408137a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"408137a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A vaccine support table was available to students outside the event classroom, hosted by Dr. Kathleen Scarbrough, with Family, Population, and Preventative Medicine at Stony Brook Medicine. Dr. Scarbrough worked with students one-on-one to lookup their HPV vaccine status in NYSIIS and provide support in scheduling vaccine appointments for those not vaccinated. Dr. Scarbrough has conducted research on HPV vaccine knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs among SBU students, with one major finding being that many students are not aware of their vaccine status or how to obtain their vaccine record. Other findings from this research were used to inform our education at this event, including students\u2019 concerns about vaccine safety and cost, as well as lack of awareness of the prevalence of HPV and associated cancers.<\/p><p>CPiA also partnered with leaders from four student organizations; Pre-Nursing Society, Student Nursing Association, Women in Healthcare, and the American Association of Men in Nursing, who took the reins on organizing and promoting the event, with support from SBU\u2019s Center for Prevention &amp; Outreach. Student leaders guided our efforts to best fit what students wanted to learn, how they wanted to learn it, where and when students were most available, and how to get the word out.
