Stony Brook Cancer Center’s CPiA team headed back to the Suffolk County Farm for another Sun Safety Fun Day at their 4H Summer Camp Program. This Yaphank-based day camp program combines learning with outdoor fun as campers explore their backyard farm, livestock pastures and historic haybarn. Suffolk County Farm adopted a sun safety policy for its camp program and its staff members in 2022, and our team has hosted a sun safety fun day every summer since – along with sun safety training for their staff!
Sun safety fun day gives CPiA the opportunity to teach campers how to protect themselves from the sun! Playing in the shade, wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and sleeved clothing, along with using sunscreen and reapplying were all identified by campers as ways to be sun safe. We were thrilled to see how much campers already knew about sun safety!
We spent the day with campers playing educational games such as a sun safety scavenger hunt, hot sun (hot potato), and sunny says (simon says). Children pictured above are acting out how they apply sunscreen to their arms following a command from “Sunny”
Fun facts about how animals protect themselves were shared and scavenger hunts, finding friends wearing long sleeves or hats, were completed. Sunglasses were provided to campers allowing them to remain sun safe for the rest of the summer season!
Thank you to the Suffolk County Farm 4H Camp for joining us in taking action against cancer.
