CPiA Program Coordinator is seated at a table with a pink tablecloth. Behind the table, a university building, field space with an event tent, and some shady trees are visible. There are numerous CPiA educational flyers and rack cards and CPiA-branded pens, sunscreen, and canvas bags on the table. Program Coordinator is wearing a grey sweatshirt, has long hair in a pony tail, and is smiling.
The St. Lawrence County Health Initiatives CPiA team recently attended a Breast Cancer Awareness 5K hosted by Clarkson University’s American Cancer Society on campus club. The event was held during the university’s family weekend and had a great turnout of 171 participants. There was much more for attendees to do than just the 5K, the event’s activities included Zumba, face painting, raffles, henna, and reusable bag making.
The CPiA team had a great time meeting students and their family members and discussing important cancer prevention topics. Our table provided resources on paid time off for cancer screenings, HPV vaccination as cancer prevention, and sun safety information. We also offered free sunscreen bottles and pens to anyone that stopped by and talked with us.
A special moment from the event occurred when one of the university’s chefs, a breast cancer survivor, was honored and given flowers. The American Cancer Society on campus club also hosts a relay for life event later in the school year.
