This summer, Stony Brook Cancer Center’s CPiA team supported sun safety for SEPA Mujer’s free community excursion to Watch Hill National Park on Fire Island. SEPA Mujer is a Patchogue-based community organization that empowers Latina women and girls build the power of the immigrant community towards advancing equity and justice.
In honor of Latino Conservation Week, a nationally observed week dedicated to increasing access to outdoor spaces, such as National Parks, among Hispanic and Latino folks, SEPA Mujer hosted a free community excursion to Watch Hill National Park. Children and families enjoyed a boat ride across the Great South Bay, a day of fun at the Watch Hill beach, and sun safety education from CPiA!
CPiA Community Champion and Stony Brook University School of Medicine student, Anna Veintimilla, joined SEPA Mujer to distribute free sunscreen, sunglasses, and Spanish-language sun safety education for parents and kids. Anna spoke to families and children during the trip about the importance of sun safety, engaging in informal conversations, answering questions, and correcting any misconceptions that parents or children had.
We thank SEPA Mujer and Community Champion Anna Veintimilla for taking action against skin cancer and advancing equitable access to National Parks and outdoor spaces in our community!
