Stony Brook Cancer Center hosted “Block the Sun, Not the Fun”, a sun safety family friendly day event at Smith Haven Mall in Suffolk County. With the help of our community and health care partners, we spent the day teaching kids and families about skin cancer prevention, promoting sun safety, and providing free sun safety items such as sunscreen, ultraviolet protective sunglasses, and SPF lip balm. Kids received sun safety coloring books at the kids’ activity corner and learned how to cover up at the sun safety photo booth, where kids and families took photos in wacky sunglasses, umbrella hats, animal sunhats, and more! We were joined by some of Long Island’s premier children and family destinations who gave out discounted tickets, free giveaways, and learned about how to be sun safe themselves. CPiA talked with each of our event partners about the benefits of sun safety policies in reducing skin cancer, and more than half have committed to passing a sun safety policy this summer season! We thank our community and health care partners, Smith Haven Mall, community champion Dave Wolmetz, owner of Urban Air Adventure Park, and the Long Island community for taking action against skin cancer! Contact your local CPiA office today to learn more on how to have a #sunsafesummer.
