Back to school season is an important time to raise awareness of the HPV vaccine as cancer prevention. With many parents taking their children for back to school well visits, school immunizations, and sports physicals, CPiA has been active at back to school events across the state to educate on this vital, cancer preventing vaccine. One such event took place in Amsterdam, NY, where the St. Mary’s Healthcare CPiA team was invited by Creative Connections Clubhouse and HFM Prevention Council to their back to school community event. Both Creative Connections Clubhouse and HFM Prevention Council advocate for cancer prevention in the Amsterdam community, and have implemented sun safety and paid time off for cancer screening policies. This event provided 350 backpacks to students and numerous school supplies.  CPiA educated parents about the HPV vaccine and its effectiveness in preventing six types of cancer. It was great to hear from parents that they were aware of the vaccine and many shared that their children were already vaccinated or were going for their second dose!
